Even cold plates made out of aluminium sections and casted or milled parts can be produced using Friction Stir Welding.
They are used in different industrial branches, for example in power electronics. Especially in high performance industries cold plates are of great importance, because they regulate the temperature of power semiconductors like IGBTs. An example would be the cooling of lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles.
Cold plates ensure an enlargement of the heat dissipating surfaces of a component to prevent it from overheating.
In order to do this, the cold plate has to fulfil certain requirements: it should be made of a heat conducting metal and it needs to be installed vertically to support air circulation. Additionally, it should have a dark and preferably large surface.
There are air-cooled and water-cooled cold plates. The water-cooled cold plates can dissipate a higher amount of heat in relation to their construction size.
